Chloroxylenol, also known as para-chloro-meta-xylenol (PCMX), is an antiseptic and disinfectant used to clean surgical tools and the skin. It can be found in household antiseptics, wound-cleansing products, and antibacterial soaps. Due to its phenolic structure, the halophenol is most effective against Gram positive bacteria when it breaks the cell wall. The World Health Organization has listed chloroxylenol as one of the essential medicines.
